Every year, Project by Project - Los Angeles (PbP-LA) partners with a local non-profit organization in a year-long campaign to advance awareness of important social issues in the Asian American community.

2024 - Food Insecurity

Project by Project will be focused on issues that aim to ensure equal and equitable access to high quality opportunities to our local communities.

2021 - Environment

The theme of “Asian Americans and the Environment” will explore a wide array of issues aimed at helping restore the planet we share, and allow our chapters to dive deep into specific areas such as: Sustainability, climate change, environmental justice, community resiliency plans in natural disaster recover, and drought and water quality in marginalized communities.

PbP-LA partnered with Japanese American Cultural & Community Center (JACCC)’s Sustainable Little Tokyo program as our 2021 beneficiary partner.

2020 - Civic and Political Empowerment

The 2020 campaign theme focuses on Asian Americans & Civic and Political Empowerment. PbP-LA partnered with the Pilipino Workers Center (PWC) and provided support to its Filipino Voter Engagement Program (FVEP) to get out the vote and encourage the community to complete the 2020 Census. Activities included text banking, designing an election voter ballot guide, and co-facilitating a virtual town hall event.

2019 - Homelessness

The 2019 campaign theme was Asian Americans and Homelessness. PbP-LA partnered with the Center for the Pacific Asian Family (CPAF), an organization that addresses domestic violence and sexual assault in the Asian Pacific Islander community. Through our awareness campaign and our volunteer support at community events, PbP brought the issue of homelessness to light by highlighting the critical work CPAF has done to provide support and bring resources to the growing AAPI homeless population.

2018 - Immigration

The 2018 campaign theme was Asian Americans & Immigration. Our objective was to raise awareness regarding anti-immigration propaganda and major policy changes sweeping our country. PbP-LA partnered with community nonprofit OCA-Greater Los Angeles and championed their Mentored Path to Citizenship Grant program, which alleviates the financial burden of naturalization and pairs applicants with immigration lawyers to help them overcome language and cultural barriers. At $725, the current fee for the naturalization application has increased 80% in the last 10 years, compared to minimum wage which has only increased 40%. Through the support of the community and Plate by Plate attendees, we successfully raised funds to help individuals achieve the dream of American citizenship.

2016 - LBGTQ

The 2016 campaign theme was Asian Americans & the LGBTQ community. PbP-LA partnered with Asian Pacific AIDS Intervention Team (APAIT). APAIT’s mission is to positively impact the quality of life for vulnerable communities experiencing behavioral health challenges, housing insecurity, and at-risk for HIV/AIDS. Through our partnership, we helped APAIT increase HIV awareness to prevent the transmission of HIV, and to overcome the shame, homophobia, and stigma that is attached with HIV testing and/or being linked to HIV services in order to successfully manage the disease.

2015 - Housing

The 2015 campaign theme focused on Asian Americans & Housing. PbP-LA partnered with Center for the Pacific Asian Family (CPAF). CPAF is committed to ending domestic and sexual violence in Asian Pacific Islander (API) communities by breaking through language, cultural, and institutional barriers. CPAF operates a multi-lingual and multi-cultural transitional program focusing on the needs of survivors who seek to establish independent, violence-free lives by providing permanent affordable housing options and job opportunities.

2014 - Mental Health

The 2014 campaign theme focused on Asian Americans & Mental Health. PbP-LA partnered with Pacific Asian Counseling Services (PACS). PACS enriches the lives of children and families through counseling and caring, as well as provides culturally sensitive and language specific services with expertise in the immigrant Asian Pacific Islander populations.

2013 - Arts

The 2013 campaign theme focused on Asian Americans & the Arts. PbP-LA partnered with East West Players (EWP). EWP is committed to raising the visibility of the Asian American experience by presenting inventive world-class theatrical productions, developing artists of color, and providing impactful youth education programs.

2011 - Education (Academics)

The 2011 campaign theme focused on Asian Americans & Education. PbP-LA partnered with Asian Youth Center (AYC). AYC empowers low-income, immigrant, and at-risk youth, of all communities, to overcome barriers to success through the provision of culturally and linguistically competent education, employment, and social services.

2010 - Healthcare

The 2010 campaign theme focused on Asian Americans & Healthcare. PbP-LA partnered with the Asian Pacific American Legal Center (now the Asian Americans Advancing Justice) on the Health Justice Network (HJN) project. HJN serves as a collaborative voice for the API community to advance a pro-active agenda around health disparities and the right to quality health services, while growing community leadership and developing advocacy potential in individuals and organizations

2009 - Economy

The 2009 campaign theme focused on Asian Americans & the Economy. PbP-LA partnered with Asian Pacific Islander Small Business Program (API SBP). The program assists the development of small and micro businesses in Los Angeles with a particular focus on the Chinese, Cambodian, Korean, Japanese, Thai and Filipino business communities, especially those of low income immigrants. PbP helped API SBP promote its annual Asian Small Business Expo, which is API SBP’s largest fundraising event, and assisted API SBP with attracting volunteers for the Expo.

2008 - Politics

The 2008 campaign theme focused on Asian Americans & Politics. PbP-LA partnered with Center for Asian Americans United for Self Empowerment (CAUSE). CAUSE’s mission is to advance the political and civic empowerment of the Asian Pacific American (APA) community through nonpartisan voter outreach, training, and education as well as leadership development.

2006 - Media Arts

The 2006 campaign theme focused on Asian Americans & Media Arts. PbP-LA partnered with Visual Communications (VC). Visual Communications' mission is to develop and support the voices of Asian American & Pacific Islander filmmakers and media artists who empower communities and challenge perspectives. Founded in 1970 with the understanding that media and the arts are powerful forms of storytelling, Visual Communications creates cross cultural connections between peoples and generations.

2005 - Human Trafficking

The 2005 campaign theme focused on Asian Americans & Human Trafficking. PbP-LA partnered with Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking (CAST). CAST is one of the pioneers of the US anti-trafficking movement. The organization was founded by Dr. Kathryn McMahon, the Thai CDC and a group of community activists, in response to the discovery of 72 Thai workers that had been kept for seven years in slavery and debt bondage in Los Angeles County.

2004 - Youth

The 2004 campaign theme focused on Asian Americans & Youth. PbP-LA partnered with the Little Tokyo Service Center (LTSC) to support the The DISKovery Center. The Center held 60 classes and workshops in English and Japanese, teaching over 150 students in basic computer literacy, electronic visual art mediums, and documentary filmmaking. PbP helped LTSC recruit ongoing general volunteers for the program and participated in volunteer service to the Fund Development Advisory Committee.

2003 - Seniors

The 2004 campaign theme focused on Asian Americans & Seniors. PbP-LA partnered with the Chinatown Service Center (CSC). CSC provides outstanding services and advocacy that promote better quality of life and equal opportunity for immigrants and other communities.

2002 - Domestic Violence

The 2002 campaign theme focused on Asian Americans & Domestic Violence. PbP-LA partnered with the Asian Pacific Women’s Center (APWC). APWC's mission is to provide a safe haven and culturally sensitive support services to Asian Pacific Islander survivors of domestic violence and child abuse, as they achieve personal strength, self-sufficiency and violence-free lives. APWC is also committed to education and outreach, raising awareness about domestic violence, and fostering violence prevention.
