Physically Distanced, Socially Connected

7 Ways to Support Your Community From Home

Even as we are taking measures to flatten the curve of COVID-19, now more than ever is a time to show as much support to fellow community members, representatives and more! To spread awareness and still remain civically involved, you can take these seven steps to connect to your community from home.

  • Take the 2020 Census! The US Census is an important way for our national and local representatives to know who their constituents are and what our needs may be. Start your Census online and keep an eye out for your invite in the mail to complete it!

  • Access libraries remotely. Online library cards are a great way to stay involved in the arts and education. A library e-card can present you with a multitude of entertaining and educational opportunities while at home, including access to various online classes, academic databases and more. Apply for an LA County Library e-card today!

  • Donate when possible. Essentials, such as toiletries, food, school supplies and blood for hospitals and blood banks, will go a long way for those in the community who need it most. Check out this resource on community care and how you may start to donate what you can!

  • Share on social media. To amplify resources and even more ways to support businesses, be sure to share any social media posts and Stories to your network.

  • Start a service to help those in need. If you are healthy, you can offer to shop for essentials for elderly and disadvantaged community members, who are most at risk from exposure to COVID-19. Get your neighbors involved to widen the lending hand by starting a community pod!

  • Shop your local businesses. Restaurants and small businesses have been affected especially hard by COVID-19, and are in dire need of our support. You can order takeout from your favorite local spots while practicing social distancing, and buying gift cards from establishments to use once they reopen. Currently, our Instagram has Story Highlights of many API-owned and local vendors that can use all of our help!

  • Tune into city hall meetings and announcements online. Our representatives need to see that they still have an audience to address. Many events are live-streamed via your city’s website or social media so that you can hear updates on current topics and simultaneously encourage lawmakers to continue to involve their constituents. For Los Angeles, virtual announcements can be tuned into from the official LA County website and Facebook page.

Stay safe and informed! Continue to spread the word and check out our comprehensive site of COVID-19 LA resources, as we frequently update when more resources become available. We are stronger, together!
