2022 Summer Safety Series Recap

Following initiatives like our 2021 Safety Awareness Workshop, Project by Project NY hosted our first-ever Summer Safety Series across three boroughs in NYC in collaboration with Rain Haus, to help protect the AAPI community. Due to rising tension and xenophobia during the COVID-19 pandemic and disinformation about its origin, New York City saw a sharp increase in anti-Asian sentiment and hate crimes—Stop AAPI Hate reported more than 9,000 anti-Asian incidents in the first year of the pandemic alone.

We were stationed in three locations over three weekends: Columbus Park in Manhattan, 8th Ave and 60th Street in Brooklyn, and Queens Public Library in Flushing, providing safety kits containing pepper spray, personal alarms, and mental health resources with multilingual instructions to NYC residents.

Rain Haus is a frequent partner of PbP NY; they are a collective of minority women wellness seekers who strive to inspire healthy lifestyle habits through thought-provoking conversations and curated events, and cultivate an inclusive community. Together, we hope we can provide resources for our community to stay safe and healthy in these trying times.

Overall, we managed to distribute hundreds of safety kits (pepper sprays and safety alarms) to NY residents in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Flushing! A special thank you to Jeany Zhao and the Outreach Team for organizing this fantastic Summer Safety Series event.
